Blue Egg

No More Blue Eggs

Just as we were lulled into a false sense of security, another hen was attacked and killed. It happened right at dusk just before we went to lock them safely into their coop. Once again, we suspect it was the fox. We must have scared it away as it didn’t take the hen with it. We lost Maree, the Americauna.

    i’m sorry to read that.
i know we have foxes in scarborough too. are raccoons predators to chicken as well?

i just found your blog by the the link from citytv.
i am really inspired by the idea of keeping chicken for eggs. hope they ban the ban ASAP.

I wouldn’t leave chickens alone free range in Toronto at all. Always babysit them when they are out of the cage getting exercise. Too many cats can jump a fence, dogs, raccoons any thing.

    • Raccoons are definitely a threat. In my experience, they don’t seem to be an issue during the day. I’ve seen my chickens hanging out with a raccoon in broad daylight without an issue. At night, I make sure to lock the girls up for safety.

Cats are not an issue at all.

Regarding dogs, the chickens must be kept in an area where dogs do not have access. Dogs seem to have a strong instinct to attack chickens.
